1. Alphabet Recognition:
Let's start with the basics – mastering the alphabet! Turn learning letters into a delightful outdoor adventure with these engaging activities:
Write various letters on the driveway and have your child spray each letter as you call them out, either by name or sound.
Write various letters on the driveway and have your child either trace or write each letter beside it.
Write uppercase letters on the driveway and have your child write the lowercase letter beside it and vice versa.
Draw out a classic hopscotch and fill in with various letter. Have your child call out the letter sound as they hop on the letters.

2. Word Families:
Write out a word ladder (ie: cat, sat, bat, fat, mat, hat) have your child read the word and hop on it.
Write a single CVC word and have your child build the word ladder by replacing the first letter with a new one. Allow them to include nonsense words.
Write out a bunch of CVC words from 2-3 different word families. Have your child circle each family with a different colour.

3. Spelling:
Have your child draw a picture (or draw one yourself) and challenge them to label the elements in the picture. Start by just having them write the first letter, as they become more confident see if they can attempt the entire word.
Call out letter sounds, blends, or diagraphs and have your child write the correct letter/letter combination on the driveway. For added difficulty have them write all letters and letter combos that make that sound.
Write words on the driveway with a missing letter. Tell your child the word and have them figure out the missing letter. (ie: bar_ = bark)
Call out spelling words and have your child write out words with different colours for vowels and consonants.

4. Reading:
Create a reading scavenger hunt. Hide various objects around your yard and write the words on the driveway. Have your child read the word and find the item.
Write various words on the driveway. Have your child quickly spray each letter with a water gun while saying the letter sound. Then have them spray across the whole word while they blend the sounds.
Using a list of compound words write the first half of each word in a column. Take the second half of each word and write a second column beside it out of order. Have your child draw a line connecting the compound word.
Write various sentences on the driveway. Have your child read them and act them out. (ie: I am dancing.)

5. Sentence Building:
Write basic sentences on the driveway and have your child fill in the proper punctuation. Start simple with just ending punctuation.
Write out basic sentences in all lower-case on the driveway and have your child circle where the capitals should be.
Write out sentences with mistakes and have your child re-write it correctly. Alternatively they can circle the mistakes.

Say goodbye to mundane study sessions and hello to the world of chalk-powered literacy enlightenment! Let's chalk our way to literacy mastery, one colorful word at a time.
