Musical understanding is such a lovely gift to give to your children. You have the remarkable opportunity to nurture this love for music in your little musicians through creative and engaging activities. One fantastic way to do this is by incorporating simple music manipulatives into your classroom. These hands-on tools not only make learning fun but also enhance students' musical skills and understanding. Let's explore some exciting music manipulatives that will inspire your students to unlock their musical potential!
Note Stones

Materials:
Gems or small stones
Sharpie or paint marker
Bar Cards
Note Stones are a delightful way to introduce children to musical notes. I used decorative gems from the dollar store and drew notation symbols on them. I also printed small bar charts for children to line them up on. Start simple by using them to create rhythms and deepen their understanding of how many counts are in a bar. As children start learning notes they can arrange the stones on their bar graph and take their first steps toward writing music. As students get more any more familiar with their notes you can add in different stones for time signatures, keys, accidentals, dotted notes, etc.
Popsicle Stick Notation

Materials:
Popsicle Sticks (some cut in half)
Rubber bands, large and small
Rests printed on card stock
Popsicle Stick Notation is another fun rhythm building exercise. By using a combination of popsicle sticks, rubber bands and rest children can explore a more dynamic way to create rhythms. Have children build clapped rhythms with popsicle sticks. Have children create their own rhythms paying attention to how many notes fit into a bar. I have included a chart below to show how to create the notes with the popsicle sticks. Start fairly simply with just quarter and eighth notes and expand from there until the children have a solid grasp.
Rhythm Cards
Materials:
Rhythm Card Printable
Laminator
Scissors or paper cutter
Rhythm Cards are an excellent resource for teaching students rhythm patterns and time signatures. By using cards with different rhythms (such as quarter notes, eighth notes, and rests), students can practice clapping, tapping, or drumming out rhythms. This activity not only improves their rhythm recognition but also strengthens their understanding of beat and tempo. Rhythm cards are a versatile manipulative that can be used for individual or group activities.
Mega Blocks

Materials:
Mega blocks (1, 2 and 4 bumps)
Sharpie
Mega Blocks are a great tool to help teach children how organize notes in a bar. Label mega blocks with corresponding notes (ie: 1 bump= 1 count) I have included a graphic of how to label each type of block. Stack the blocks on a 4 bump block that will represent your bar. As children build their rhythms, they will also be troubleshooting their knowledge of note durations.
Staff Whiteboards

Materials:
Staff Paper
Laminator or dry erase pouches
Dry erase Markers
Staff Whiteboards are a useful tool for teaching musical notation and composition. Students can draw notes, rests, and musical symbols on the staff whiteboards, allowing them to practice writing music and creating their own compositions. Staff whiteboards are interactive and reusable, making them a sustainable and engaging resource for exploring music theory concepts and fostering students' compositional skills. You can buy these already made or make your own by printing out staff paper and laminating or lacing inside of a dry erase pouch.
