Language Arts

Reading and writing about sharks can be exciting and educational! Here are some activities to get started:

Shark Copy-Work

Objective: Develop a deeper understanding of sentence structure and practice penmanship.

Activity:

  • Print out a list of shark facts and have your child copy them into their journal. This activity can be done over the course of the unit writing one interesting fact a day and drawing a picture to go along with it.

Alternatively children can find their own facts in books that have been borrowed from the library.

Shark Vocabulary Word Wall

Objective: Develop and expand vocabulary.

Activity: Create a word wall featuring shark-related vocabulary. Some useful word examples include:

  • predator

  • caudal fin

  • gills

  • ocean

Math: Shark Mathematics

Math can be exciting with these shark-themed activities:

Shark Size Comparison

Objective: Apply math skills to real-life scenarios.

Activity:

  • Begin by discussing the different sharks and their sizes.

  • Have students create scale models of different sharks.

  • Sort the sharks by size.

Geography: Shark Habitats Around the World

Understanding where sharks live enhances knowledge of their habits and behaviors.

Mapping Sharks Habitats

Objective: Develop an understanding of sharks habitats.

Activity: Using a large world map mark out where different types of sharks live. Discuss what makes these sharks well adapted to where they live. Map out migration routes of different sharks and discuss the various reasons for migrating.

Building Shark Habitat.

Objective: Develop an understanding of shark habitats.

Method:

  1. Have children choose their favorite shark species and challenge them to build an appropriate habitat for them.

  2. Help your child research the habitat of their chosen species and gather supplies for their model.

  3. What adaptation does your shark have to make them well suited for their habitat?

Science: Learning About Sharks

Incorporating scientific concepts into your shark unit fosters curiosity and discovery!

Life Cycle of a Shark

Objective: Discuss the lifecycle of sharks.

Explore the life cycle of sharks, from pregnancy or egg to adulthood. Use visual aids like diagrams and children's books.

Activity: Have kids create a life cycle wheel illustrating the stages of the sharks life. Discuss what happens during different stages in their life cycle.

Anatomy of a Shark

Objective: Discuss the anatomy of sharks.

Discuss the different parts of a shark and how they are well adapted for life in their habitats.

Activity: Label a model of a shark, older children can include facts about each part.

Adaptations: Shark Skin(Dermal Denticles)

Objective: Discuss the unique properties of sharks skin.

Materials: large plastic bags (we used one-quart bags)

  • Coarse sand paper

  • Crayons

  • Paper outline of a shark

  • Scissors

  • Iron (with adult supervision)

Method:

Step 1: Cut out your shark outline. It should be smaller than your sand paper.

Step 2. Color the sand paper heavily with crayons.

Step 3. Place the sand paper over your shark outline, colored side down. Have an adult help you iron the sand paper on top of the paper with the shark outline.

Step 4. Let the pages cool, and then pull the sand paper off. Run your hand along the body of your shark. What does it feel like?

Discussion: Shark dermal denticles are small, tooth-like structures that cover the skin of sharks, providing them with a unique texture and offering several advantages. These denticles reduce drag while swimming, allowing sharks to move more efficiently through water. Additionally, they serve as a protective layer against parasites and injuries, contributing to the overall health and survival of these marine predators.

Shark Teeth Investigation

Objective: Investigate the teeth of a shark.

Materials:

large plastic bags (we used one-quart bags)

  • Variety of Shark teeth

  • Magnifying glass

Method:

Step 1: Set out various sharks teeth and have children explore the different shapes and sizes.

Step 2: Sort they teeth by type and take a closer look at the types.

Discussion: What differences did you notice? What do you think the different tooth shapes mean for the sharks?

Arts and Crafts: Shark Creativity

Art and creativity reinforce what children learn about sharks!

Cupcake Liner Shark

Objective: Utilize simple materials to create a shark.

Materials:

  • gray/silver cupcake liner

  • mini gray/silver cupcake liner

  • white cupcake liner

  • blue cardstock paper

  • red cardstock paper

  • googly eyes

Directions:

Step 1: Glue middle section of gray cupcake liner onto blue cardstock paper. Leave the outside edges of it unglued for now.

Step 2: Cut a triangle shape out of your mini gray/silver cupcake liner. You should end up with three pieces. The triangle is your dorsal fin and the other 2 are pectoral fins.

Step 3: Glue the triangle under the top of the gray cupcake liner. Glue the other pieces on the sides near the bottom to make shark fins. Now finish gluing down the outside edges of the gray cupcake liner.

Step 4: Cut your white cupcake liner in half and glue half of it at the bottom of your gray cupcake liner. This will represent counter-shading.

Step 5: Cut out a mouth from the red cardstock and draw in teeth. Glue to your shark and add eyes.

Free Form Shark Art

Objective: Focus on developing individual creativity.

Activity: Provide your child with various craft supplies and challenge them to create their shark art. There are no rules here besides using shark as a prompt. Revisit this often providing different mediums and supplies.
