Exploring the Seasons: Winter

Oh, Winter, with your frosty air, glistening snow, and festive cheer, you bring a unique magic to the world! As the days grow shorter and the temperatures plummet, it's the perfect time to embrace the outdoors and revel in all that this enchanting season has to offer. And what better way to do that than by engaging in some fun, outdoor activities? Let's dive into exciting activities for children to enjoy during this magical time of year, all while developing a variety of skills along the way!



  1. Tobogganing: Grab yours sleds and head out to one of your local hills. Meet up with friends and try out different sleds and toboggans.


  2. Ice Skating: Strap on your skates and take to the ice. Take advantage of local outdoor rinks, and frozen ponds that have been deemed safe for skating.


  3. Snow and Ice Painting: Mix up food colouring and water and put it into spray bottles, trays, and condiment bottles. Spray, drips and paint onto snow or slabs of ice.


  4. Build a Snow Fort: Make giant snowballs and stack them together to build snow forts. Add to it throughout the season.


  5. Build Snow Sculptures: Start easy with snowmen. Then challenge your children to build other things out of snow.


  6. Snowball Fight: Teach your children to make snowballs and initiate a snowball fight!


  7. Animal Track Identification: Find animal tracks in the snow and try to identify them using an animal track chart or book. How many different tracks can you find?


  8. Frozen Bubbles: On especially cold days(less than -10 Celsius) blow bubbles outside and watch them freeze!


  9. Winter Stargazing: Go out after dark on a clear night and look up at the night sky. How many constellations can you find?


  10. Create Winter Birdfeeders: Challenge your children to build feeders for the birds. Observe your backyard visitors throughout the season.


  11. Winter Hiking: Set out on some of your favorite trails to explore the changes of the season. Make sure to pack lots of filling snacks and hot chocolate.


  12. Some other ideas include: Snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing, ice fishing.
