Oh, Autumn, with your crisp air, vibrant foliage, and pumpkin-spiced everything, you bring such joy to the world! As the leaves change colors and the temperatures start to drop, it's the perfect time to get outdoors and revel in all that this enchanting season has to offer. And what better way to do that than by engaging in some fun, outdoor activities? Let's dive into exciting activities for children to enjoy during this magical time of year, all while developing a variety of skills along the way!

  1. Building Leaf Piles: It is no surprise that playing in leaves is on the top of our list for Autumn. Have children help rake up all of the leaves in your yard and jump right in. This age old activity never goes out of style and can keep kids occupied for far longer than you think as they try to build bigger and bigger piles.

  2. Apple Picking: This is such an exciting way to introduce children to where their food comes from. Explore the orchard and pick your own apples from the trees. Usually farms that offer this experience also have other things for children to see and explore. Be sure to look up lots of recipes for apples before you head out because you will have a lot to work with when you get home. Plan on making apple sauce, apple pie, apple crumble and so much more.

  3. Bird Nest Hunt: Fall offers a unique opportunity to spot many different birds nests. Once the foliage had fallen off of the trees you will be sure to see lots of birds nests perched in the branches. Invite your children to slow down and scour the branches of trees. How many different kinds of nests can you find?

  4. Visit a Pumpkin Patch: Another classic fall activity! Visit a pumpkin patch for the day and pick out your perfect pumpkin. Explore the grounds and try to find your way through the corn maze. Every pumpkin patch is different so check out their websites to see which one offers your family exactly what they want.

  5. Build a Scarecrow: Grab some old clothes and stuff them with leaves. Try to create your own scarecrow for your house? Let your children find fun ways to create a head and position your scarecrow.

  6. Leaf Crafts: With all of the beautifully coloured and shaped leaves this time of the year is perfect for nature crafts. The possibilities are truly endless when crafting with leaves! Collect leaves of different colours and shapes (you can press leaves in books with parchment paper to make them easier to glue on paper). Creates animals, people, mobiles, landscapes, rainbows, and anything else your child can imagine!

  7. Build Bird Feeders: There are so many different kinds of birdfeeders you can create! Have your children construct and hang birdfeeders in your yard and observe what kinds of birds come to visit. Using a local bird book or the internet see if you can identify all of your visitors.

  8. Mushroom Hunting: Autumn is an excellent time to go out in search of so many different mushrooms. Find an photograph as many mushrooms as you can find. Using a mushroom guidebook or the internet try to figure out what kinds of mushrooms you found.

  9. Fishing: Head to a nearby creek or river for a morning of fishing. Make sure to have your fishing license up to date and follow any fishing guidelines in your area.

  10. Build Insect Hotel: With the winter fast approaching it is the perfect time to help out local insects. Fill a small wooden box using nature loose parts like pinecones, straw, sticks, leaves and whatever else you can find. Place somewhere in your garden for insects to overwinter.

  11. Autumn Picnic Ideas: Pack a lovely Autumn picnic with some of these fall favorites! What are your favorite fall recipes?
