Here’s a fun and engaging guide featuring 10 surprising instruments that young music makers can create right in your living room.

1. Homemade Shakers
What You'll Need:
Empty plastic bottles
Rice, beans, or small pebbles
Tape or glue
Decorative materials (markers, stickers, etc.)
How to Make Them:
Start by filling the empty plastic bottles with ingredients like rice, beans, or small pebbles. Try using about 1/4 to 1/3 of the bottle’s capacity for sound variation. Securely seal the bottles with tape or glue to prevent spills. Finally, let your kids decorate their shakers with fun colors or stickers.
2. Drums
What You'll Need:
An empty coffee can or similar container
Balloons
Scissors
Tape

3. Maracas
What You'll Need:
Small balloon
Newspaper
White glue
Dried beans, rice, beads, or other small items)
Dowel (for handle)
Hot glue gun
Paint
How to Make It:
Blow up the balloon and tie it off. Tear newspaper into strips. Mix a 1:1 ratio of glue and water. Dip the newspaper into the glue mixture and wrap around the balloon. Continue adding until you have covered the entire balloon with a few layers of paper, leaving a hole large enough for the dowel. Allow the paper to fully dry and then pop the balloon and remove. Add a handful of dried beans and secure your dowel over the hole with a hot glue gun. Once the glue had dried paint your maracas.
